My Husband Wasn’t Home, and My Mother-in-Law Insisted on Visiting: That Night, I Heard Strange Sounds and Went to Check

It was supposed to be an ordinary evening. My husband was away on a business trip, and I planned to spend the night alone, enjoying some quiet time. But things took an unexpected turn when my mother-in-law called, insisting she come over. At first, I hesitated. It wasn’t that I didn’t like her, but we had never spent the night together under the same roof. Something about her tone made it difficult to refuse. Reluctantly, I agreed.

She arrived with a small suitcase, as if planning to stay for more than one night. Her behavior seemed normal—she helped me prepare dinner, shared some stories about my husband’s childhood, and we even laughed a little. I started to think that maybe this wouldn’t be so bad after all.

But then, strange things started happening.

The First Sign of Something Unusual
Around midnight, I was lying in bed, scrolling through my phone, when I heard a faint noise coming from the living room. It sounded like whispering, but I knew my mother-in-law was alone. Maybe she was talking in her sleep?

Curious but slightly unsettled, I decided to check. As I quietly stepped into the hallway, I saw that the living room light was still on. That was odd—I was sure we had turned it off before going to bed.

The Discovery That Shook Me
I peeked into the living room, and my heart nearly stopped. My mother-in-law was standing there, in the middle of the room, staring at the wall. At first, I thought she might be sleepwalking, but then I noticed something even stranger—she was whispering in a language I didn’t understand.

A cold shiver ran down my spine.

«Mom?» I called out hesitantly.

She didn’t respond. Instead, she slowly turned around and looked at me. Her eyes seemed distant, almost as if she wasn’t fully present.

Then, in a voice that didn’t sound like her own, she said:

«You shouldn’t have come out.»

I froze.

A Night of Horror
A sudden gust of wind blew through the room, even though all the windows were closed. The lights flickered, and the air became unbearably cold. My mother-in-law stepped toward me, her expression completely unreadable.

«Are you okay?» I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.

She tilted her head, then blinked a few times as if coming out of a trance. «Oh, dear, I must have been sleepwalking,» she said with a nervous smile. But something about her demeanor told me that she knew exactly what she was doing.

I didn’t sleep that night. Every creak of the house sent chills down my spine. I kept wondering—what was she whispering? Who was she talking to? And most importantly, what would have happened if I hadn’t woken up?

The Morning After
By sunrise, my mother-in-law was back to her usual self. She acted as if nothing had happened, chatting over breakfast like the night before had never taken place.

I wanted to ask her about it, but something inside me told me not to. Instead, I just nodded along to her stories, waiting for her to leave.

As soon as she stepped out the door, I locked it behind her and collapsed onto the couch, exhausted.

That was the last time I ever let her stay over when my husband wasn’t home.

And to this day, I still wonder—who, or what, was she talking to that night?
